What is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is prescribed to patients experiencing indigestions a s result of acid reflux including a disorder called Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) as well as stomach ulcers. Omepraszole is a class of medicines call a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Simply put, the role of a PPI is to reduce the amount pf acid released into the stomach. Acid is corrosive, if part of the gastrointestinal tract is compromised it can prevent healing. Using PPIs in patients with acid reflux has been shown to reduce common symptoms of acid reflux such as heartburn.
What is the right dosage for me?
Research has shown that chronic use of high dosage Omeprazole can put people at risk to spinal hip and wrist fractures. Therefore, Omeprazole is often prescribed in staggered dosages over a time. Typically, 20mg – 40mg is used for healing, and 10mg dosages are used for maintenance and mild symptoms.
