Description
What is Orlistat?
Orlistat is a Lipase Inhibitor. This medication is prescribed to people with a BMI over 30 kg/m2, or a BMI over 28 kg/m2 with pre-existing health problems. The aim of the medication is to inhibit the enzyme that breaks down dietary fats to prevent them from absorbing into the body. Fat is the most calorific of all the nutrients, 9kcal/gram. Inhibiting fat absorption significantly reduces energy intake. Orlistat is intended to be taken alongside a reduced-calorie diet that is well balanced, but lower in fat. Orlistat has been a clinically tested and proven way for people to lose weight in the short term. Because Orlistat inhibits fat absorption, this also inhibits absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. For this reason, a multivitamin supplement should be taken at bedtime to ensure maximum absorption.
Please note that the effects of this drug are only temporary. When taking the medication, the effect of Orlistat results in an increase in faecal fat as early as 24 to 48 hours after your first dosage. If you choose to stop taking your medication, fat will reappear in your faeces within 48 to 72 hours. This is not a medication that should be taken permanently. If you have not lost any weight after 3 months of taking orlistat, then this is unlikely an effective medication for you. However, you may continue to use Orlistat beyond 3 months if you have successfully lost 5% of your initial weight during this time.
